Aphonia after Quinine Administration

چکیده
To the Editor, The Indian Medical Gazette. Sir,?In the January 1930 issue of the Gazette Dr. N. S. K. Iyer reports a case of aphonia following quinine administration. Whilst I was in charge of a dispensary at Kalva in the Kurnool district in 1902, there came to me a Mahomedan boy of 8 years old, asking for a dose of purgative. I gave him, I remember, a dose of Pulv. Jalapae Co., according to his age, at about 8 a.m. At noon on the same day his father brought him to me, complaining that the boy could not speak, although he was all right in all other respects. 1 wished to keep the patient under observation until the evening, but, to satisfy the father, I gave him half an ounce of Aqua Chloroformi, with a request that the boy should be brought to the dispensary in the afternoon. When he came, I was glad to note that he was able to talk as usual. Subsequently I was informed by the compounder that the bottle contained plain water instead of Aqua Chloroformi. Therefore a simple purgative can also produce " aphonia."?Yours, etc.,

Tlie condition improved during the night, and she was all right next morning, when, without consulting me, another dose of the mixt...
متن کاملDose-dependent resorption of quinine after intrarectal administration to children with moderate Plasmodium falciparum malaria.
The pharmacokinetics of increasing doses of an intrarectal Cinchona alkaloid combination containing 96.1% quinine, 2.5% quinidine, 0.68% cinchonine, and 0.67% cinchonidine (Quinimax) was compared to that of parenteral regimens in 60 children with moderate malaria. Quinine exhibited a nonlinear pharmacokinetics, suggesting a saturation of rectal resorption. When early rejections appeared, blood ...

In vivo and in vitro evidence from animals suggesting that gap junctions (GJs) play a role in the spreading of epileptiform activity. We have examined the influence of the gap junction opener trimethylamine (TMA) and the connexin 36 (Cx36) gap junctional blocker, quinine, on epileptiform activity induced by 4-aminopyridine (4-AP) in the rat entorhinal cortex (EC) and the CA1 hippocampal region....
متن کاملPsychogenic aphonia: no fixation even after a lengthy period of aphonia.
BACKGROUND Although psychogenic aphonia is considered to be a conversion disorder, aphonic patients are primarily treated symptomatically. This is because it is considered of overriding importance to elicit a voice quickly to avoid fixation of the aphonia. The aim of this study was to show that, for patients exhibiting the symptom of voicelessness, not eliciting the voice immediately will not l...
